Role Overview

Join a fully remote engineering team building technology behind a major source of open knowledge.

Evolve MediaWiki Content Platform wikitext infrastructure used across hundreds of languages.

Own complex technical work spanning architecture, implementation, delivery, performance, reliability, and maintainability.

Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers, client teams, and community contributors.

Workplace

  • The role is fully remote and based in Canada.
  • The team is globally distributed and may offer occasional travel for organizational events.

Accountabilities

  • Improve large-scale wikitext processing infrastructure while balancing user experience, performance, compatibility, and maintainability.
  • Own technical projects from problem definition through architecture, implementation, testing, and production delivery.
  • Develop and maintain PHP and JavaScript software and reliable internet-facing APIs.
  • Build scalable components using caching and persistence technologies.
  • Instrument systems to monitor performance, quality, reliability, and feature characteristics.
  • Contribute to testing, code reviews, security improvements, documentation, and maintainability initiatives.
  • Mentor engineers and communicate architectural decisions and technical trade-offs.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of relevant professional software engineering experience delivering production software at scale.
  • Experience with parser generators, interpreters, language runtimes, compilers, or complete language-feature product lifecycles.
  • Ability to independently lead complex projects, make architecture decisions, communicate trade-offs, and deliver with limited direction.
  • Experience designing reliable, high-performance components used by other teams, products, or large user populations.
  • Strong testing, code review, security, architectural decision-making, cross-team collaboration, and mentoring skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, self-motivation, and comfort navigating ambiguity.
  • HTML5 and DOM familiarity, Node.js expertise, wikitext or content-management experience, open-source contributions, and a relevant degree or equivalent certification are welcome but not essential.
