  • Own complex technical projects through architecture, implementation, testing, and production delivery.
  • Develop and maintain PHP and JavaScript software, reliable APIs, scalable components, caching, persistence, and monitoring.
  • Collaborate across engineering, product, design, client, and community teams to resolve challenges and deliver features.
  • Contribute to testing, code reviews, security improvements, documentation, architectural decisions, and maintainability initiatives.
  • Mentor engineers and help improve wider team technical quality through reviews, discussions, documentation, and guidance.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of relevant professional software engineering experience delivering production software at meaningful scale.
  • Experience with parser generators, interpreters, language runtimes, compilers, or complete language feature lifecycles.
  • Ability to independently lead complex projects, make architectural decisions, communicate trade-offs, and deliver with limited direction.
  • Experience designing reliable, high-performance components used by other teams, products, or large user populations.
  • Strong testing, code review, security awareness, architecture, cross-team collaboration, communication, and mentoring skills.
  • Familiarity with HTML5 and DOM manipulation, Node.js, MediaWiki or other content management systems, and open-source contributions is advantageous.
  • A degree in computer science, software engineering, STEM, or equivalent professional certification is welcome but not essential.

Technical environment

  • The technical environment includes PHP, JavaScript, wikitext processing, internet-facing APIs, caching, persistence, monitoring, automated testing, and modern web technologies.
  • Related or advantageous technologies include Node.js, HTML5, DOM manipulation, MediaWiki, Drupal, WordPress, Markdown, parser generators, interpreters, language runtimes, and compilers.

Team and working environment

  • The team is globally distributed and fully remote, with synchronous and asynchronous collaboration.
  • The environment values autonomy, collaboration, knowledge equity, open access, inclusion, sustainable work-life balance, and open-source work.

Benefits and development

  • Benefits are applicable according to the country of hire and may include statutory benefits.
  • The role offers professional development, large-scale software engineering expertise, occasional team or organizational travel, and work on open-source software serving hundreds of millions of users.
