Role overview

The Senior Frontend Engineer will work on design editing accessibility within Canva's Editing Group.

The role focuses on making the Canva Editor and user-created designs accessible to people who rely on screen readers and other assistive technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build accessible Editor interactions, including focus management, keyboard navigation, live regions, and ARIA roles and states.
  • Use VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS as development tools to test, debug, and validate accessibility behavior.
  • Collaborate across the Editing Group through design reviews, pull requests, technical guidance, and accessibility issue resolution.
  • Identify recurring accessibility gaps and develop architectural solutions rather than isolated patches.
  • Work directly with assistive technology users and collaborate across engineering, design, product, and research disciplines.

Required qualifications

  • Solid commercial experience building accessible web applications and practical WCAG knowledge.
  • Hands-on screen-reader development experience, including technical understanding of VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS.
  • Experience working in a large, interconnected frontend codebase.
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and React.
  • Clear communication across engineering and design disciplines.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with WAI-ARIA patterns for complex widgets and accessibility for rich or real-time interactions.
  • Familiarity with browser and native accessibility APIs and platform-specific behavior.
  • Experience with AI-enabled accessibility features, mobile accessibility, or collaboration with accessibility specialists and users.

About the team

The Editing Accessibility team sits within Canva's Design Experience supergroup and Editing Group.

The team works on accessible design creation and accessible-by-default output across a large, interconnected Editor architecture.

Many projects involve complex problems such as collaborative editing, rich text editing, and canvas-based experiences without established implementation patterns.

Benefits

  • Canva offers equity packages, inclusive parental leave, an annual wellbeing and social connection allowance, and flexible leave options.

Application notes

  • Interviews are conducted virtually. Candidates may provide pronouns and request reasonable interview adjustments.
