Role overview

Canva is hiring a Senior Frontend Engineer for the Editing Accessibility team.

The role focuses on building accessibility into the Canva Editor and complex interconnected frontend systems.

The team works on accessibility for people using screen readers and other assistive technologies.

What you will do

  • Design and build accessible Editor interactions, including focus management, keyboard navigation, live regions, and ARIA roles and states.
  • Use screen readers daily to test, debug, and validate accessibility behavior.
  • Collaborate with Editing Group engineers to build accessible features from the start.
  • Review designs and pull requests, provide technical guidance, and resolve accessibility issues before release.
  • Identify systemic accessibility gaps and develop architectural solutions rather than isolated patches.
  • Work with assistive technology users throughout design and development.
  • Support other Editing Group teams through accessibility guidance and code reviews.

Required qualifications

  • Solid commercial experience building accessible web applications.
  • Practical understanding of WCAG and experience shipping accessible products.
  • Hands-on experience with screen readers, including VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS.
  • Ability to work in a large, interconnected frontend codebase.
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and React.
  • Clear communication across engineering, design, and product disciplines.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with WAI-ARIA authoring patterns for complex widgets.
  • Experience with accessibility for real-time interfaces, HTML5 canvas, data visualisation, spreadsheets, or WYSIWYG editors.
  • Familiarity with browser and native accessibility APIs.
  • Experience building AI-enabled accessibility features.
  • Experience with mobile accessibility, including React Native.
  • Experience working with accessibility specialists, assistive technology users, or accessibility-focused researchers.

About the team

The Editing Accessibility team sits within Canva's Design Experience supergroup and Editing Group.

The team aims to make Canva's Editor and user-created designs accessible by default.

The work involves solving accessibility challenges in collaborative editing, rich text editing, and canvas-based environments.

Benefits

  • Canva offers equity packages, inclusive parental leave, an annual wellbeing and connection allowance, and flexible leave options.
  • Interviews are conducted virtually, and reasonable interview adjustments can be requested.
