Senior Backend Engineer - Experiments Team

Role Overview

Workplace

• The role is based in Sydney, Australia.
• Canva uses a hybrid working model that combines remote work with in-person collaboration on campus.
• Interviews are conducted virtually.

Responsibilities

• Shape technical direction by balancing greenfield builds, technical debt reduction, and system performance improvements.
• Own critical architecture components end to end, including the analysis engine and metrics platform.
• Maintain robust services as they scale and improve query latency and system scalability.
• Explain complex technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Lead cross-functional projects from kickoff through delivery.
• Mentor engineers and help raise the team's engineering standards.
• Balance strategic priorities with immediate delivery needs.
• Drive complex technical problems to resolution with cross-functional stakeholders.
• Work closely with data scientists, analytics engineers, product designers, product managers, and Pilot users.
• Use SQL extensively at scale for experiment analysis and reporting.

Required Profile

• Strong backend engineering skills and deep SQL experience are required.
• Comfort working with large, complex data models is required.
• Strong communication skills are needed for technical and non-technical audiences.
• The candidate should think strategically while remaining practical and able to scope effective MVP solutions.
• The candidate should demonstrate customer empathy, curiosity, and willingness to learn experimentation concepts.
• Familiarity with data warehousing platforms such as Snowflake is advantageous.
• Familiarity with NoSQL is a plus.
• Data science experience is a bonus, not a requirement.
