General Description

The Heavy Equipment Manager leads the heavy equipment fleet and associated maintenance activities.

The role is accountable for technical performance, reliability, availability, allocation, repair standards, turnaround times, and cost control.

The position works with Operations, Workshop, Stores, Procurement, Finance, and other teams and reports performance to Senior Management.

Fleet Maintenance and Performance

  • Lead maintenance and repair activities and provide technical guidance across ABI, Kubota, SANY, Hyundai, and Klemm equipment.
  • Develop preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance strategies and establish repair priorities.
  • Monitor equipment availability, utilization, downtime, breakdowns, turnaround time, compliance, and fleet performance.
  • Maintain equipment records, work orders, inspection records, and equipment history for operational and management review.
  • Prepare reports covering fleet condition, maintenance performance, costs, risks, and improvement actions.

Safety, Cost, and Stakeholder Management

  • Ensure compliance with safe working practices, applicable legislation, HSE policies, LOTO, tool calibration, lifting controls, and technical standards.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, technical development, operator training, and competency assessment.
  • Manage maintenance budgets and control labor, parts, external repair, inventory, vendor, and other equipment costs.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Workshop, Stores, Procurement, and Finance to resolve equipment and maintenance issues.

Operator and Field Coordination

  • Distinguish equipment productivity constraints from operator or operational issues and assign appropriate corrective action.
  • Ensure operators complete daily and pre-start checks and that defects are promptly communicated to maintenance teams.
  • Review productivity, operating hours, utilization, idle time, breakdowns, defects, and recurring operator issues.
  • Maintain communication between field operators, Operations, and Workshop and oversee safe, correct, and efficient equipment operation.
  • Develop operator training programs covering safe operation, inspections, troubleshooting, utilization, and good operating practices.

Qualification Requirements

  • Associate’s degree, trade certification, diploma, or equivalent technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, Industrial Maintenance, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in heavy equipment, workshop, fleet maintenance, or heavy maintenance operations.
  • Strong hands-on experience with ABI, Kubota, SANY, Hyundai, and Klemm equipment.
  • Experience developing maintenance strategies, managing fleet allocation and availability, and planning operations.
  • Experience with budgeting, financial analysis, and maintenance cost control.
  • Ability to analyze productivity, downtime, maintenance data, operator performance, and equipment utilization.
  • Ability to develop and deliver operator training and assess operator competency.

Must-have Skills

  • Strong technical diagnostic and problem-solving capability across heavy equipment.
  • Strong understanding of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance strategies.
  • Ability to manage repair priorities and achieve turnaround and time-compliance targets.
  • Strong leadership, training, people-development, communication, organization, and commercial skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and experience with ERP or fleet maintenance systems.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and relevant HSE requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of drilling activities, equipment, accessories, operation, maintenance, inspection, repair, and field application.
  • Ability to use telemetry and equipment data to identify trends, early failures, productivity issues, and proactive maintenance actions.
