General description

Operate, maintain, and manage drilling rigs and associated equipment for boreholes, geotechnical drilling, exploration drilling, and related projects.

Ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality drilling in line with project specifications, safety regulations, and environmental standards.

Rig operation and drilling

  • Operate rotary, percussion, auger, diamond core, sonic, directional, Klemm, and Kubota drilling rigs.
  • Monitor penetration rate, torque, pressure, and other drilling parameters.
  • Set up, position, and secure rigs and equipment before drilling.
  • Adjust tooling and techniques to changing ground conditions.
  • Install and retrieve casing, drill rods, and core barrels.

Equipment maintenance and safety

  • Complete daily pre-start checks, inspections, and routine maintenance on rigs, compressors, pumps, and support vehicles.
  • Diagnose and report equipment faults, breakdowns, and safety concerns.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow lock-out/tag-out, confined-space entry, and other site safety procedures.
  • Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and hazard assessments.

Sampling and data collection

  • Collect core, soil, and rock samples according to technical and quality standards.
  • Record drilling logs, depths, lithology, and water strikes accurately.

Site preparation and support

  • Assist with rig mobilization, demobilization, and transportation to and from project sites.
  • Operate forklifts, water trucks, excavators, or other auxiliary machinery when required.
  • Manage drill cuttings and fluids under environmental and waste-management procedures.

Teamwork and communication

  • Work with drillers' assistants, offsiders, mechanics, and field supervisors.
  • Communicate progress, challenges, and site conditions to managers, clients, and safety officers.
  • Train and mentor junior staff in drilling operations and safety procedures.

Qualifications and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade certification is preferred.
  • 2–5 years of drilling experience, depending on project type.
  • Valid Drill Rig Operator's License or certification where applicable.
  • Knowledge of drilling fluids, downhole tools, rig hydraulics, ground conditions, drilling methods, and sampling standards.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, strong technical ability, and accurate record keeping.
  • Current First Aid/CPR or equivalent safety certification and a valid driver's license; heavy vehicle endorsement is preferred.
  • Ability to work long hours in remote or challenging environments with good physical fitness and stamina.
  • Commitment to safety, teamwork, professional conduct, problem solving, adaptability, and continuous improvement.
