Role overview

What you will own

• Define a 12–18 month technical vision with product leadership and engineering teams.
• Hire, develop, and mentor engineers and junior managers while creating psychological safety.
• Guide discovery, planning, and execution through small-batch delivery and continuous feedback.
• Translate product objectives into technical solutions and communicate measurable business impact.
• Partner with product, design, business, and engineering teams to resolve ambiguity and drive alignment.
• Guide system design, architecture, and engineering practices for scalability, security, and performance.

Expected outcomes

• Within 90 days, onboard the teams, understand their technical roadmap and pain points, and provide feedback on domain health and near-term priorities.
• Within six months, help teams ship consistently, identify and mentor an emerging technical leader, coach a cross-domain initiative, and improve or maintain code quality and velocity.
• Within 12 months, establish a communicated technical vision, grow an engineer toward staff-level or management capability, support strategic initiatives, and develop a potential future manager.

Leadership and people management

• At least 4 years of hands-on technical leadership experience managing engineering teams.
• Demonstrated ability to hire, mentor, and grow engineers.
• Comfort with cross-functional leadership across product, design, business, and engineering teams.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity, handle conflict constructively, and create psychological safety.

Technical depth

• At least 8 years of hands-on software engineering experience in production systems.
• Deep understanding of at least one of distributed systems, backend systems, data platforms, mobile platforms, or web-scale infrastructure.
• Ability to work across diverse technology stacks and make impactful architecture decisions.
• Hands-on understanding of TDD, pair programming, continuous refactoring, and trunk-based development, or willingness to learn and lead these practices.

Engineering sense

• Ability to consider scalability, reliability, latency, cost efficiency, and security beyond feature delivery.
• Experience balancing delivery speed and technical debt.
• Experience leading or contributing to technology migrations, architectural changes, or platform initiatives.

Nice-to-have experience

• Experience leading multiple teams or a domain in a high-growth environment.
• Exposure to XP practices.
• Background in marketplace, delivery, or logistics optimization.
• Experience mentoring or developing engineering managers.
• Familiarity with AWS, GCP, or Azure.
