Job Overview

  • University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers a Senior Corneal Fellow position.
  • Start Date: September 2026 or ASAP.
  • Contract Type: Fixed term, 12 months.
  • Purpose: Training Contract for structured training and supervised clinical development.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Senior Fellow position in the Corneal team within the tertiary Eye Unit.
  • 12 month fixed term period.
  • State of the art facilities including new outpatient department and fully equipped operating theatres.
  • Latest imaging equipment: OCTs, Optos, digital slit lamps.
  • Four fully equipped ophthalmic theatres with Alcon Phacoemulsification machines, Ngenuity 3D viewing systems, Leica Proveo 8 microscopes, intraoperative OCT.
  • Diverse patient base: over 120,000 outpatient visits, 6000 inpatients, 24,000 eye casualty cases annually.
  • Opportunity to develop research and clinical experience, publish research papers, participate in clinical trials, and develop surgical skills.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

  • Full time post based at Southampton Eye Unit for 12 months.
  • Tertiary referral centre for corneal disease and ocular surface pathology.
  • Exposure to a wide range of complex corneal pathology.
  • Expected to participate fully in clinical research.
  • Proficient at high volume cataract surgery.
  • Surgical training in keratoplasty (DMEK & DSEK), Amniotic Membrane Transplantation, pterygium surgery, Collagen Cross linking Therapy.

Person Specification Qualifications, Training & Experience

  • Essential: MBBS or equivalent, GMC registration, appropriate knowledge base, anterior segment fellowship (cornea and/or glaucoma), >500 independent phaco cataract surgeries.
  • Desirable: MRCOphth or equivalent, MD or PhD, corneal transplantation experience, experience in audits, clinical trials experience.

Aptitudes and Skills

  • Essential: Evidence of ability to work in multi professional teams, participation in teaching, understanding of equality and diversity.
  • Desirable: Publications in ophthalmology, high impact journals, ability to perform high volume cataract surgery, ability to complete Audit.

Additional Information

  • Appointment under local contractual terms for Trust appointed fellow doctors.
  • Skilled Worker sponsorship may be available.
  • Educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors with named educational supervisor.
  • Opportunity for CPD and study leave.
  • Salary based on experience and skills, nodal pay point linked to grade.
  • Proposed interview date: 15th July 2026.
