About the role

The Quality Test Engineer III joins Elsevier's Search and AI Platform team.

The role is hands-on and automation-first, with a focus on API and service-level testing throughout the development lifecycle.

The platform supports search, recommendation, knowledge graph, research data, and AI-powered search products.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain automated API and backend-service test suites using Karate and Cucumber with RestAssured.
  • Write reliable, maintainable Java tests that provide fast and accurate feedback.
  • Validate functional and non-functional behaviour, including error handling, reliability, and service interactions.
  • Contribute to contract and service-level testing strategies for REST and evolving GraphQL APIs.
  • Integrate and maintain automated tests in CI/CD pipelines at multiple stack levels.
  • Use New Relic and logging for diagnosis, monitoring, and quality analysis.
  • Analyse technical problems and solutions and contribute to engineering discussions.
  • Contribute to incident reviews and post-mortems and improve coverage to prevent repeat issues.
  • Shape acceptance criteria, identify edge cases, and improve testability early in development.

Required qualifications

  • Solid hands-on automation experience in software testing or quality engineering.
  • Strong API testing or contract testing experience, including data formats and service interactions.
  • Strong Java coding and scripting ability.
  • Hands-on experience with Karate and Cucumber with RestAssured.
  • Experience supporting testing integration in CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ability to analyse problems and solutions at the appropriate level of detail and abstraction.
  • Ability to take ownership of assigned areas and continuously improve quality outcomes.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams.

Nice-to-have qualifications

  • Performance testing experience.
  • Familiarity with GraphQL APIs and service-level or contract testing approaches.
  • Experience testing shared services or internal platforms.
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes, including EKS.
  • Interest in search, AI, or data-oriented systems.
