JOB Description
Position Title
Main Purpose of the Position
To ensure the reliability, compliance, and optimization of electrical protection systems through expert maintenance, diagnostics, and system improvements.
Job Objectives
1. System Protection and Reliability: To ensure the reliability and optimal performance of electrical protection systems, including relays, circuit breakers, and fault detection systems, across divisions like Gasification, Power Block, Utilities, and ASU. 2. Preventive and Predictive Maintenance: To perform preventive and predictive maintenance programs for protection systems to ensure operational integrity and minimize system failures. 3. Fault Analysis and Troubleshooting: To perform fault data extraction, analysis and troubleshooting of protection system issues to identify the root causes and implement corrective measures. 4. Compliance and Safety: To ensure all protection system activities comply with safety regulations, industry standards, and company policies. 5. Testing and Calibration: To conduct regular testing, calibration of protective relays functions, switchgear, and associated equipment to maintain accuracy and reliability. 6. System Design and Optimization: To support the design, modification, and optimization of protection systems to improve efficiency and integration with other electrical systems. 7. Collaboration and Project Support: To work closely with operations, maintenance, and project teams to provide technical support during maintenance projects, turnarounds, and system upgrades. 8. Documentation and Reporting: To maintain comprehensive records of maintenance activities, test results, and fault analysis, and provide insights to improve system performance.
Formal Qualifications/Education
- Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
- Preferred
- A master’s degree in Power Systems Engineering is advantageous.
- Relevant qualifications: • Certification in Protective Relaying (e.g., SEL, GE, Siemens or Beckwith). • Electrical safety certification (e.g., NFPA 70E). • Advanced certifications in power system protection and fault analysis are advantageous.
Job Related Work Experience
Essential
Work experience in electrical protection system engineering within industrial or power generation environments 4 – 10 years.
Hands-on experience with protective relays, fault analysis, and testing equipment.
Job Related Knowledge and skills
- Understanding of protection systems, including the principles of overcurrent, transformer differential, line differential, motor and generator protection, high impedance bus bar protection, synchronizing function, automatic voltage regulator and arc-flash protection.
- Advanced
- Understanding of protection system schemes, including SLDs, EHV, HV and MV circuit breaker trip close circuits, motor contactor control circuit, generator protection panel schemes and interlock circuits.
- Advanced Knowledge of power system operations, fault current calculations, and regulatory standards.
- Familiarity with emerging technologies, such as digital relays and IoT-based monitoring for protection systems
- Aware
- Awareness of safety protocols and industry best practice
- Advanced protection relay testing tools (e.g., Omicron, Megger), along with Relays (SEL, GE, SIEMENS, MICOM, Beckwith, REG-DA, TAPCON) software and configurations
- Having analytical and problem-solving skills for fault diagnostics and system improvements
- Ability to carry out the maintenance, installation, testing, and modification activities on the plant’s protection systems, including (feeder protection OC EF functions, line differential, transformer differential, motor and generator protection, high impedance bus bar protection, synchronizing function, automatic voltage regulator and arc-flash protection).
- Effective communication and teamwork skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams
- Proficient
- Knowledge of CMMS (e.g., SAP PM) for maintenance tracking and documentation
