This is a leadership role for the first Design Leader of Gusto's Banking team, covering the established Wallet product and newer SMB Banking product.
The role is a player-coach position that combines hands-on product design with people leadership and will evolve toward more people leadership as the team grows.
Day-to-day responsibilities
- Manage an initial team of three designers and hire to build the team.
- Establish rituals, hiring pipelines, and planning cadence across Consumer Banking and Business Banking.
- Coach designers working on a live product and a new product being developed from zero.
- Set goals, success metrics, scopes, sequences, and milestones with product and engineering partners.
- Raise the quality bar through critique and review while defining design standards for SMB Banking.
- Stay hands-on on high-stakes design decisions, especially the SMB Banking path to beta.
- Partner with product, engineering, Risk, Compliance, Legal, Data, and Operations teams.
- Coordinate with adjacent design and product teams to create a connected financial ecosystem.
- Develop career plans for direct reports and represent Banking design needs to senior leadership.
What the employer is looking for
- 10+ years of product design experience and 4+ years of people management experience are required.
- The candidate should be an established player-coach manager with experience leading designers.
- Experience across products at different stages, including established and 0-to-1 products, is preferred.
- A portfolio and management record showing high-quality consumer or business financial product work are required.
- Fintech, banking, or financial platform experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience with Risk, Compliance, Legal, regulated financial products, or related banking systems is advantageous.
- Experience incorporating AI tools and practices into design team workflows is required.

Gusto's design organization includes more than 80 creative and collaborative people working with Product, Engineering, Data, and Marketing.
The organization is building an AI-native design practice that uses AI to prototype, shorten feedback loops, and ship quality user experiences.
Compensation
- The stated cash compensation ranges are $178,000–$253,000 yearly in San Francisco and New York and $147,000–$215,000 yearly in Denver.
- Final offer amounts depend on factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the listed ranges.
Workplace expectations
- Gusto employees based in Denver, San Francisco, or New York are expected to work from the office approximately two to three days per week or more depending on the role.
- When approved to work outside a Gusto office, employees need a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection.
