Role overview

Join AECOM’s Water team as a Principal or Associate Flood Forecasting Modeller.

Lead technical teams delivering real-time flood forecasting projects and support wider hydrology and non-real-time modelling work.

Responsibilities

  • Produce and review Flood Forecasting Inception Stage Reports, including assessments of existing models and hydrometric data.
  • Develop, calibrate, and check flood forecasting models such as PDM and Flood Modeller.
  • Carry out non-real-time modelling and hydrological analysis using Flood Modeller, ICM, HEC-RAS, MIKE 11, and FEH methods.
  • Prepare technical reports documenting model builds and associated uncertainties.
  • Lead and contribute to tenders for key clients.
  • Mentor team members, build client relationships, and collaborate across disciplines.
  • Track relevant legislation and guidelines.
  • Use project management systems to deliver outputs on time and within budget.

Requirements

  • Significant experience in flood forecasting modelling using Flood Modeller.
  • Strong knowledge of Environment Agency requirements and forecasting-system compatibility.
  • Experience applying and calibrating hydrological models, including Muskingum-Cunge and PDM.
  • Experience processing hydrometric data and reviewing gauge ratings.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or another relevant discipline.
  • Strong GIS skills using QGIS, ArcGIS, MapInfo, or equivalent tools.
  • Scripting knowledge using Python, Anaconda, Ruby, or similar is advantageous.
  • Able to work autonomously in a committed, deadline-driven team.
