Role Overview

Own and manage a dry-bulk freight desk covering Handysize to Capesize vessel tonnage.

Maintain P&L accountability, drive margin generation, and optimize routes and landed costs across physical trade flows.

Manage freight and fuel exposure within approved limits and lead governance for the freight function.

Freight Trading and Operations

  • Charter vessel tonnage through voyage charters, time charters, and Contracts of Affreightment.
  • Use Forward Freight Agreements, bunker hedging, and mark-to-market risk controls to manage exposure.
  • Partner with procurement on multimodal supply chain networks from mine site and loading port to destination ports.
  • Build relationships with shipowners, disponent owners, shipbrokers, port operators, and 3PL providers.
  • Oversee vessel nominations, laytime, demurrage, despatch, statement of facts review, and commercial claims resolution.
  • Structure logistics service agreements, establish operational SLAs and KPIs, and lead vendor qualification and evaluation.

Market Analysis and Compliance

  • Deliver market intelligence, freight-rate forecasts, and route-economics analysis.
  • Use Baltic Exchange indices, supply and demand balances, and bunker dynamics in market analysis.
  • Ensure adherence to international sanctions, KYC regulations, maritime insurance obligations, and CII and EEXI standards.

Leadership and Governance

  • Lead, coach, and mentor desk analysts.
  • Establish governance, controls, and reporting frameworks for the freight function.

Requirements

  • Ability to manage freight and fuel exposure using Forward Freight Agreements, bunker hedging, and mark-to-market risk controls within approved limits.
  • Knowledge of dry-bulk freight markets, vessel chartering, and physical trade flows.
  • Ability to analyze freight rates, route economics, Baltic Exchange indices, supply and demand balances, and bunker dynamics.
  • Knowledge of international sanctions, KYC regulations, maritime insurance obligations, and marine decarbonization standards including CII and EEXI.
  • Ability to establish governance, controls, KPIs, SLAs, and reporting frameworks for a freight function.
  • Ability to lead, coach, and mentor desk analysts.
