Role overview

The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian provides specialized cataloging and metadata expertise for print and online resources.

The role reports to the Associate University Librarian for Technology and Technical Services.

The position coordinates assigned technical services staff and processes and supports acquisitions, serials, and document delivery.

Job responsibilities

  • Catalog print and electronic resources using AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, MARC21, and relevant metadata standards.
  • Provide face-to-face and virtual reference assistance.
  • Manage deposits into the AUS institutional repository.
  • Coordinate the Archives Specialist and archives functions.
  • Coordinate copyright services, rights management, and course-pack processes.
  • Provide departmental liaison services covering collection development, maintenance, instruction, and professional activities.
  • Maintain strong links and networks with regional and international partners and sector colleagues.
  • Showcase and disseminate best practices.

Required qualifications and experience

  • An ALA-accredited or equivalent Master of Library and Information Studies degree is required.
  • At least two years of relevant academic library experience is required.
  • Direct cataloging experience with print and electronic resources is required.
  • Significant experience engaging proactively with faculty and researchers is required.
  • Experience supervising paraprofessionals in an academic library is required.

Skills and competencies

  • International academic librarianship experience is preferred, preferably in an American curriculum institution.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are expected.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills are expected.
  • The role requires effective work in a diverse multicultural environment.
  • A proactive commitment to continuing professional development is expected.

Technical skills

  • Experience with AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, MARC21, and library automated systems is expected.
  • Knowledge of technical services and library technology trends is expected.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, indexing and abstracting databases, and related software is expected.
  • Understanding of cataloging processes and procedures is expected.
  • Experience with Library Services Platforms and discovery layers such as OCLC WorldShare is expected.
