The Opportunity

WSP is seeking an AWIPS Application Developer to maintain, extend, and modernize a cloud-based AWIPS platform.

The platform supports operational weather forecasting for marine, energy, and public-sector clients.

The role involves building data pipelines for near-real-time numerical weather prediction and observational data.

The position is a hands-on development role focused on Python, Java, cloud environments, and complex data systems.

Your Impact

  • Maintain and enhance a cloud-hosted AWIPS environment, including custom plugins, procedures, and data flows.
  • Develop AWIPS components using Python and Java, including decoders, processing utilities, and site-specific tools.
  • Manage GRIB, NetCDF, and derived model and observational data ingestion for timely forecaster access.
  • Troubleshoot projections, metadata, decoding, and parameter-mapping issues across deterministic and ensemble models.
  • Work with meteorologists to translate operational needs into maintainable AWIPS solutions.
  • Improve AWIPS deployment and configuration workflows in cloud, containerized, or infrastructure-as-code environments.
  • Contribute to documentation and knowledge transfer for long-term in-house AWIPS development capability.

Required Skills

  • Strong software development experience in Python and/or Java for data-intensive or scientific applications.
  • Experience working in Linux-based environments.
  • Familiarity with structured scientific data formats such as GRIB, NetCDF, or similar.
  • Experience building or maintaining data ingestion pipelines and ETL-style workflows.
  • Ability to work directly with domain experts such as meteorologists to support operational systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior AWIPS II development, customization, or administration experience is an asset.
  • Experience with numerical weather prediction or meteorological datasets is an asset.
  • Exposure to AWS, Azure, or similar cloud platforms and production systems is an asset.
  • Familiarity with map projections, grids, and coordinate systems is an asset.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical or time-sensitive operational systems is an asset.

Compensation

  • The listed salary range is CAD 89,800 to CAD 118,900 in AB, BC, NT, NU, SK, and YT.
  • The listed salary range is CAD 81,100 to CAD 107,700 in Manitoba and Ontario.
  • The listed salary range is CAD 81,900 to CAD 112,800 in NB, NL, NS, PE, and QC.
  • Final compensation may vary based on qualifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, and organizational needs.
