Role Overview

AECOM is hiring an Associate Director, Structural Engineer for its Water Structures team.

The role leads technically complex water and wastewater infrastructure design across Scotland and the wider UK&I region.

The position supports major programmes including Scottish Water’s SR27 Enterprise programme.

Technical Leadership

  • Lead structural design delivery for complex reinforced-concrete water infrastructure projects.
  • Act as technical authority for structural engineering decisions across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Oversee design outputs for quality, compliance, and technical excellence.

Project Delivery

  • Manage structural design packages from concept through detailed design and construction support.
  • Coordinate with civil, mechanical, process, and geotechnical disciplines.
  • Support project directors and programme managers in client delivery activities.

Clients and Commercial Work

  • Lead technical discussions, workshops, and design reviews with clients and stakeholders.
  • Build relationships with clients and delivery partners.
  • Support bids, proposals, and technical work-winning activities.

Team Development and Quality

  • Mentor Senior and Principal Engineers and support technical capability growth.
  • Champion a safety-first design culture aligned with AECOM principles.
  • Drive engineering assurance, design risk management, and compliance with relevant standards and procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

  • BEng or MEng degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status, such as MICE and/or MIStructE.
  • Significant reinforced-concrete and structural-steelwork design experience.
  • Broad structural design experience in water or other highly regulated infrastructure sectors.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and managing technical delivery.

Leadership Profile

  • Communicate complex engineering decisions clearly to clients and stakeholders.
  • Lead with technical credibility and make sound engineering decisions under pressure.
  • Develop high-performing teams and understand the commercial impact of engineering decisions.

Workplace

  • The role is based in an AECOM office with hybrid work options, including office, remote, and client-site work.
  • New hires must attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office.
