Role Overview

The Water Structures team is seeking an Associate Structural Engineer to deliver complex infrastructure engineering across Scotland and the wider UK&I region.

The role provides technical leadership on reinforced-concrete water and wastewater infrastructure programmes.

AECOM is delivering projects for clients including Scottish Water, contractors, and public-sector organisations.

Technical Leadership

  • Lead structural design delivery for complex reinforced-concrete water infrastructure projects.
  • Act as technical authority for structural engineering decisions across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Oversee design outputs for quality, compliance, and technical excellence.

Project Delivery

  • Manage structural design packages from concept through detailed design and construction support.
  • Deliver projects safely, efficiently, and within programme and commercial constraints.
  • Coordinate with civil, mechanical, process, and geotechnical disciplines.
  • Support project directors and programme managers in client delivery activities.

Client and Commercial Influence

  • Build trusted relationships with key clients and delivery partners.
  • Lead technical discussions, workshops, and design reviews with stakeholders.
  • Support bids, proposals, and technical work-winning activities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve outcomes through innovation and engineering efficiency.

Team Development

  • Mentor and develop Senior and Principal Engineers within the structural team.
  • Support technical capability growth and knowledge sharing across the business.
  • Help shape a high-performance engineering culture focused on technical excellence and accountability.

Health, Safety and Quality

  • Champion a safety-first design culture aligned with AECOM's safety, ethics, and quality principles.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, codes, and quality procedures.
  • Drive engineering assurance and design risk management throughout project delivery.

Project Portfolio

Projects include the Scottish Water SR27 Enterprise Programme and major wastewater treatment upgrades.

The portfolio includes service reservoirs, pumping stations, flood resilience, coastal protection, dam, and reservoir infrastructure.

Additional multidisciplinary water infrastructure programmes support water authorities across the UK&I.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering is required.
  • Chartered Engineer status, such as MICE and/or MIStructE, is required.
  • Candidates need significant reinforced-concrete and structural-steelwork design experience.
  • The role requires broad structural design experience and experience leading multidisciplinary teams.
  • Candidates must communicate complex engineering decisions clearly to clients and stakeholders.

Working Arrangements

  • AECOM offers hybrid work options across office, remote, and client-site locations.
  • New hires must attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office.
