Job Purpose

The Assistant Vessel Operations Manager is accountable for the end-to-end operational performance of an owned tanker fleet.

The role owns the Operations function, including strategy, team performance, budget, governance, and external relationships.

The position connects daily voyage execution with the company's commercial and financial objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and improve fleet operations strategy, vessel deployment frameworks, off-hire policy, commercial response protocols, and charter-party management standards.
  • Monitor fleet-wide voyage KPIs including availability, off-hire, demurrage accruals, bunker variance, and laytime status.
  • Review and approve operational and commercial documents and settlement proposals within delegated authority.
  • Ensure charter-party obligations and commercial entitlements are actively managed across fixtures.
  • Maintain fleet-wide operational procedures and complete voyage documentation to support invoicing, claims, and compliance.
  • Monitor vessel positions and live operational situations and provide clear direction to the Operations team.

Commercial Management and Dispute Resolution

  • Oversee demurrage claims, aging, settlements, and high-value negotiations.
  • Provide Chartering with feedback on charter-party language and operational constraints affecting fixture strategy.
  • Govern fleet bunker procurement to meet cost, timing, and sustainability targets.
  • Oversee freight invoicing accuracy and timely cost recovery.
  • Resolve escalated cargo, detention, off-hire, and notice-of-readiness disputes.
  • Monitor sanctions, regulatory, and trade compliance exposure across fleet operations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field is required.
  • MBA or postgraduate qualification in maritime management or business administration is a plus.
  • 7–8 years of tanker shipping operations or post-fixture experience is required.
  • 2–3 years as a Senior Shipping Operator or equivalent senior operations professional is required.
  • Demonstrated experience managing operators and accountability for commercial outcomes is required.
  • Experience owning or co-owning an operations budget in a tanker trading environment is required.
  • Seagoing tanker-vessel experience is a significant advantage.
