Role overview

This is a full-time, on-site Marine Shaft Machinist role based in Abu Dhabi.

The role focuses on machining, repairing, aligning, and inspecting marine propulsion shafts and related components in marine and shipyard environments.

Responsibilities

  • Operate lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, and other workshop machinery.
  • Perform shaft setup, centering, turning, facing, boring, threading, taper machining, keyway cutting, and polishing.
  • Inspect dimensions, tolerances, runout, straightness, concentricity, and alignment using precision instruments.
  • Coordinate with engineering, quality control, and ship repair teams to plan work and resolve issues.
  • Support onboard shaft work and installation or removal of shafts and couplings.
  • Maintain tools and equipment and follow marine and shipyard safety standards.
  • Guide and train junior machinists when required.

Required qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Marine Shaft Machinist or similar professional in a shipyard, dry dock, marine workshop, or ship repair environment.
  • Hands-on experience with marine shafts, couplings, bearings, bushes, seals, and related components.
  • Extensive experience operating conventional heavy-duty lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, and workshop machinery.
  • Proficiency with micrometers, dial indicators, Vernier calipers, bore gauges, and other inspection tools.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, machining specifications, tolerances, and repair instructions.
  • Knowledge of shaft alignment, clearances, fits, and marine shaft repair procedures.
  • Commitment to HSE requirements and safe machining practices.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise or train junior machinists when required.

Work conditions

  • The role may require onboard vessel work, confined-space work, overtime, night shifts, weekends, and emergency repair jobs.

Preferred qualification

  • A technical diploma, ITI, vocational qualification, or equivalent certification in machining, mechanical engineering, marine engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills are expected in a multicultural marine and shipyard environment.
