Job Description

The Charge Nurse – ICU is responsible for providing advanced clinical nursing care and operational leadership within the critical care unit.

The role ensures safe, high-quality, and evidence-based patient care while coordinating unit activities, staffing, admissions, transfers, and discharges.

The Charge Nurse supports, guides, and supervises nursing staff, promotes professional practice, and ensures continuity of care, patient safety, and positive patient and family experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver and oversee high-quality, patient-centered nursing care in ICU in line with evidence-based practice.
  • Provide clinical leadership and act as a role model for professional nursing practice.
  • Create and maintain a safe, clean, and supportive environment for patients, families, and staff.
  • Coordinate and manage unit operations, including patient flow, admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Allocate staffing and resources effectively in collaboration with the Nurse Manager to ensure safe patient care.
  • Supervise, guide, and support nursing staff, ensuring appropriate skill mix and competency-based assignments.
  • Monitor patient acuity, evaluate nursing interventions, and ensure timely escalation of care when required.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control, fire safety, occupational health & safety, and hospital policies.
  • Identify, report, and follow up on incidents, near misses, and hazards in coordination with Quality and OSH teams.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical documentation and regularly audit patient records.
  • Liaise effectively with patients and families to support care delivery, satisfaction, and experience.
  • Support Shared Governance Councils and implementation of best-practice initiatives.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, audits, KPI monitoring, and data collection to improve patient outcomes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned based on operational requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
  • Valid Nursing License.
  • Minimum 6 years of clinical nursing experience, with demonstrated leadership or Charge Nurse experience in ICU.
  • BLS & ACLS certifications.
