Role Overview

Specialist role providing comprehensive professional and ethical clinical services in neonatology.

Provides care in the hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and nursery, including inpatient treatment and emergency coverage.

Supports clinical governance, quality management, professional development, and service improvement.

Clinical Neonatology Activities

  • Perform professional duties of a neonatologist.
  • Assess and reassess patients and conduct daily rounds in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and nursery.
  • Perform general and specialized examinations and procedures across neonatology.
  • Order laboratory and radiological examinations, determine diagnoses, prescribe medications, and advise nursing and dietary care.
  • Provide inpatient newborn care and attend difficult or cesarean-section deliveries.
  • Provide consultation and referral services to inpatient departments.
  • Provide on-call emergency coverage for neonatal emergencies according to the duty roster.

Clinical Governance and Administration

  • Monitor clinical risks associated with direct patient care.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and document all care and patient education.
  • Follow clinical governance, quality management, Department of Health, JCI, ISO, OSHMS, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Attend assigned committee meetings and monitor established clinical and quality indicators.
  • Contribute to international-level guidelines, best-practice protocols, and quality assurance programs.
  • Handle complaints appropriately and foster interdepartmental liaison.

Professional Development

  • Maintain excellence in medical practice through continuing professional development.
  • Review journals, texts, and periodicals to remain current with techniques, procedures, drugs, and therapies.
  • Participate in in-service training, continuing medical education, divisional teaching, and physicians' conferences.
  • Assist senior staff with best-practice guidelines and protocols.
  • Participate in departmental improvement initiatives.

Occupational Safety and Health

  • Comply with occupational safety instructions, policies, and safe working procedures.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.
  • Follow emergency and evacuation procedures and assist with risk assessments.
  • Report hazards, incidents, near misses, and safety issues.
  • Attend OSH training, awareness programs, mock drills, audits, and inspections.

Infection Prevention and Control

  • Implement the NMC infection prevention and control policy and strategy.
  • Maintain strict hand hygiene, including the five moments of hand hygiene.
  • Follow bare-below-the-elbows and environmental-care requirements to reduce infection risks.
