Role Overview
Develop advanced energy products, catheters, and instruments for novel applications within robotic surgical systems.
Serve as a technical contributor on the Advanced Research team supporting innovative technology development and commercialization.
Resolve complex mechanical, material, and manufacturing design issues and troubleshoot higher-level system issues.
Essential Job Duties
- Design, develop, and verify advanced energy catheters, flexible electromechanical instruments, and related accessories.
- Develop, test, and document solutions, processes, and designs according to corporate standards and departmental procedures.
- Perform hands-on assembly and testing for proof-of-concept, design development, pre-clinical, and verification and validation activities.
- Investigate root causes of design and manufacturing defects or failures.
- Prepare inspection procedures, assembly instructions, test methods, purchase specifications, bills of materials, part drawings, and assembly drawings under change control.
- Collaborate with clinical engineering on product concepts and design tradeoff analysis.
- Observe clinical cases, interview clinical experts, and support pre-clinical laboratories and clinical cases.
Required Experience and Education
- At least 8 years of relevant experience, or at least 6 years with a master’s degree.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, biomedical engineering, or a related engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent work experience.
- Experience working in cross-functional research and development teams.
- Hands-on rapid prototyping experience with flexible instruments and components.
- Proficiency in CAD-based mechanical design; SolidWorks is preferred.
- Experience with part and mechanism design, 3D printing, and plastic injection molding.
- Experience across the full product development lifecycle.
- Ability to work independently under limited supervision and communicate effectively across organizations.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with FDA QSR 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, or related standards.
- Experience integrating fluid management features such as irrigation, perfusion, or cooling within flexible instruments.
- Experience with flexible electromechanical device development.
- Understanding of medical system integration and interfaces.
- Experience with energy delivery devices.
- Experience with IEC 60601 impacts on instrument and accessory design.
Working Conditions
- This is a full-time position requiring commuting to or relocating to Sunnyvale, California.
- Up to 10% travel is required, with some international travel possible.
