Own features end-to-end. Design, implement, test, and operate the services and interfaces you build. Take pride in the quality, reliability, and observability of what ships to production, from first commit onward.
Lead technical design. Break down complex, ambiguous problems into well-sequenced, parallelizable work. Write clear technical specs, provide accurate estimates, and surface trade-offs so the team builds the right thing, not just the specified thing.
Raise the engineering bar. Write high-quality, well-tested code and conduct meaningful code and design reviews. Apply strong practices in reliability, security, and observability. Use AI-assisted tools thoughtfully to move faster, while owning the correctness and architecture that tooling alone can't guarantee.
Drive cross-team collaboration. Partner with Product, Design, and adjacent engineering teams to align on requirements, dependencies, and delivery plans. Help resolve technical disagreements and unblock related work.

Mentor and grow peers. Be a go-to resource for other engineers through pairing, code review, and design feedback. Represent Remitly's technical standards and values in interviews and hiring.
Operate what you build. Participate in on-call rotations and share ownership of your team's production systems. Proactively reduce toil and resolve root causes, not just symptoms.
6+ years of software engineering experience, with a demonstrated ability to independently design and ship production systems at scale.
Strong backend fundamentals — experience building, scaling, and operating distributed services in a language such as Go, Java, Python, or Kotlin.
Comfort working across the stack, including building or integrating with customer-facing interfaces (e.g., React/TypeScript), even if backend is your primary focus.
Experience designing secure, scalable, and performant systems on cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS).
A track record of leading feature development across a team — breaking down work, writing specs, coordinating dependencies, and delivering on commitments.
Strong fundamentals in system design: data modeling, API design, service reliability, and performance trade-offs.
Experience with observability and production operations — instrumenting code, reading dashboards, and debugging under pressure.
A track record of mentoring engineers and contributing to team technical standards.
Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to have: experience in payments, fintech, or money movement.
