Job Purpose

The Senior Data Center Operations Engineer ensures data center activities follow established procedures, change-control rules, and industry best practices.

The role carries out project, incident, and workflow-based data center work and advises operations engineers on installation practices and fault finding.

The position supports on-site colocation clients and third parties and ensures work activity is documented in data center, workflow, or incident management tools.

Responsibilities

  • Support data center engineers and act as an escalation point for the team.
  • Maintain access control lists, check access reports, and ensure security processes are followed.
  • Maintain process and procedure documentation and up-to-date shift logs.
  • Install, relocate, recover, and repair network, server, and storage hardware to manufacturer standards.
  • Manage goods-in and goods-out processes, storage records, asset tracking, and asset status updates.
  • Perform daily security and cleanliness checks and regularly audit data centers and records.
  • Ensure all hardware installation, move, and change records are accurate and updated.
  • Control stocks including copper and fiber patch leads, patch panels, and connectors.
  • Produce daily and monthly activity reports.
  • Provide holiday and sickness cover at short notice and remain flexible to maintain service levels.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience supervising a team of data center engineers is required.
  • Five or more years of experience working in data center environments is required.
  • Experience with hardware manufacturer installation standards and copper and fiber cabling standards is required.
  • Basic network knowledge, broad IT hardware experience, and understanding of IP networks are required.
  • Experience in an ITIL-controlled environment with change, incident, and problem management processes is required.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and CRM databases is required.
  • Ability to manage third-party contract staff and companies working within the data center is required.
  • The role requires effective prioritization, communication, attention to detail, time management, flexibility, and the ability to work independently or within a team.
  • CDCTP, HP Accredited Platform Specialist, Systimax ND3361, or Corning NPI qualifications are preferred.

Illinois Base Salary

  • The expected Illinois base salary is $103,000 to $135,000 USD.
  • The base salary range excludes incentive compensation and may vary based on individual skills and experience.
  • Regular full-time employees are eligible for healthcare, retirement, life insurance, paid time off, and qualifying paid leave.
