Job Summary

  • The Newbuilding Estimator is responsible for developing accurate cost estimates for new vessel construction projects within the shipyard.
  • This includes assessing technical specifications, analyzing shipbuilding drawings, and preparing detailed budgets for labor, materials, subcontractors, and equipment.
  • The Estimator plays a key role in competitive bidding, cost control, and project planning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for new ship construction projects, including hull, outfitting, machinery, painting, accommodation, and commissioning phases.
  • Analyze general arrangement drawings, technical specifications, classification requirements, and customer documents to define project scope.
  • Perform quantity take offs and material assessments from 2D/3D design packages.
  • Obtain and evaluate quotations from vendors and subcontractors for key systems such as propulsion, HVAC, and electrical systems.
  • Calculate man hours based on standard productivity rates and shipyard historical data across various trades (hull, piping, electrical, etc.).
  • Collaborate with the commercial team to define pricing strategy, contingency allowances, and profit margins.
  • Assess risks and uncertainties in the estimate and propose appropriate mitigation measures or contingency budgets.
  • Maintain up to date records of material costs, labor rates, and productivity metrics from past projects.
  • Support the preparation of technical and commercial proposals for clients.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of estimating experience in a shipyard or marine engineering environment.
  • Strong understanding of ship construction processes, materials, and regulatory requirements (IMO, SOLAS, Class rules).
  • Familiarity with shipbuilding estimating software and tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Ship Constructor, Excel, ERP systems).
  • Good analytical and cost modelling skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities to collaborate with engineering, procurement, and production teams.
