Job summary

The Programmer Analyst I supports the Learning Technology Hub by designing, developing, and supporting learning technology solutions for campus-wide teaching and learning.

The role focuses on smaller software modules, system integrations, shared platforms, cloud services, AI solutions, data pipelines, and analytics infrastructure.

The position reports to the Software Innovation Technical Lead and works under guidance from senior technical and management roles.

Compensation

  • The compensation range is CAD 7,158.42 to CAD 10,292.25 monthly.
  • The job end date is ongoing.

Work performed

  • Program, test, debug, maintain, and support enterprise learning technology applications and services.
  • Build reusable platforms, shared services, developer tooling, APIs, cloud services, and integrations.
  • Build RAG APIs, chatbots, conversational assistants, MCP tools or servers, and agentic AI workflows.
  • Contribute to data pipelines, data-lake infrastructure, analytics-ready datasets, and AI/ML use cases.
  • Implement row-level security, access controls, and privacy and security controls.
  • Evaluate requirements, design integrations, provide technical guidance, document solutions, and conduct demos.
  • Participate in Agile planning, refinement, estimation, testing, project implementation, and continuous improvement.

Minimum qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline is required.
  • At least three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
  • The role requires respect for diverse perspectives and commitment to developing equity, diversity, and inclusion awareness and skills.

Preferred qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in at least one of cloud computing, data lake or analytics infrastructure, AI/ML, or data governance is requested.
  • Preferred experience includes AWS, full-stack development, Python or TypeScript, Git, CI/CD, SAML, LTI, APIs, and mixed development and maintenance work.
  • Additional assets include experience across multiple focus areas, CI/CD tools, and explaining complex concepts in accessible language.

Technical focus areas

  • Cloud work may include AWS, Azure, GCP, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Data work may include ETL/ELT, relational databases, data cleaning, analytics-ready datasets, and complex data structures.
  • AI work may include generative AI, large language models, RAG, chatbots, conversational assistants, agentic workflows, APIs, and MCP.
  • Governance work may include access controls, row-level security, and data privacy or security practices.
  • Learning technology integrations include Shibboleth, SAML, LTI, and APIs.

Core duties

  • Prepare programming documentation and follow software development lifecycle methodologies and best practices.
  • Build working relationships and collaborate with faculty, instructors, support staff, researchers, and technical colleagues.
  • Maintain current knowledge of information technology techniques and tools and perform related duties as required.

The Learning Technology Innovation Centre supports face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online learning technology, from pilots through campus-wide deployments.

The unit supports self-developed, community-developed, and vendor-supplied solutions across the UBC community.
