Role overview

Hatch is seeking a Power Substation Communications Engineer for its Energy team in the United States.

The role supports electrical, communications, SCADA, and cybersecurity design for medium- and high-voltage substations.

The candidate may be based in Denver, Minneapolis, or Amarillo.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and review electrical design packages for medium- and high-voltage substations.
  • Review substation drawings and equipment configuration requirements.
  • Evaluate design effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety.
  • Investigate failure root causes and recommend improvements.
  • Create SCADA point lists, RTU programs, HMIs, meter programs, metering overviews, and calculations under lead engineer supervision.
  • Develop site network and communications architecture packages compliant with client and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement cybersecurity architecture on substation devices and apply NERC CIP requirements.
  • Review designs for code compliance, good design practice, and constructability.
  • Travel to client sites as required.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
  • At least two years of professional experience with substation communication systems related to SCADA/EMS and teleprotection channels.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NESC, and IEEE standards.
  • Strong written and oral English communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment and provide project ownership.

Preferred qualifications

  • Professional Engineer registration is preferred.
  • Prior utility consulting experience is preferred.

Work locations

  • The candidate can be based in Denver, Colorado; Minneapolis, Minnesota; or Amarillo, Texas.
  • Travel to client sites is required as needed.
