About the Role
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi seeks a Paper Conservator to carry out conservation treatment and preventive conservation of paper-based collections. Responsibilities
- Coordinate with Collections units to set policies, standards, and procedures for collections conservation
- Undertake conservation of paper collections, perform preventive conservation activities, and conduct object treatment
- Oversee departmental paper conservation projects including research and treatment of permanent collections
- Advise on installation, display, and storage of paper and photograph collections
- Prepare condition reports for proposed acquisitions or loans of paper based material
- Record all conservation activities using Collection Management System
- Supervise interns, volunteers, and newer staff members in handling and care of collections
Requirements
- BA or MA degree in paper and photography conservation, Library Science, Arts, Culture or equivalent
- BA Degree Holders: 3 to 4 years of experience in Paper/Photography Conservation
- MA Degree Holders: 2 to 3 years of experience in Paper/Photography Conservation
- Extensive knowledge of conservation theory and techniques for books, paper, and photo materials
- Proficient knowledge of museum collection management standards and documentation systems
- Strong written and verbal skills in English

Job Purpose
- To carry out conservation treatment and preventive conservation of paper based material across collections owned or borrowed by DCT Abu Dhabi.
Key Accountabilities
- Coordinate with Collections units and input to policies, standards, and procedures for collections conservation.
- Collaborate with Collections units in planning and implementing annual program of remedial and preventive paper conservation.
- Oversee departmental paper conservation projects including research and treatment of permanent collections.
- Undertake conservation of paper collections, perform preventive conservation activities, and conduct object treatment.
- Advise on installation, display, and storage of paper and photograph collections.
- Keep up to date with latest conservation techniques through research and training.
- Implement best practices and appropriate conservation standards.
- Identify conservation work to be outsourced and manage quality of outsourced work.
- Support safe movement of paper based collections by undertaking condition assessments and preparing documentation.
- Take supervisory role occasionally: direct and supervise interns, volunteers, and newer staff.
- Deliver talks and presentations to amateur and professional audiences.
Qualifications, Experience, Competencies
- BA or MA degree in paper and photography conservation, Library Science, Arts, Culture or equivalent.
- BA Degree Holders: 3 to 4 years of experience in Paper/Photography Conservation.
- MA Degree Holders: 2 to 3 years of experience in Paper/Photography Conservation.
- Extensive knowledge of conservation theory and techniques with focus on books, paper, and photo materials.
- Good understanding of Art History (knowledge in history of books and Islamic Art is desirable).
- Proficient knowledge of museum collection management standards, documentation systems, and professional conservation guidelines.
- Practical skills, ability to work individually and as part of a team.
- Ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple conservation projects while meeting deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal skills in English.
- Interest in professional development.
Reports & Database
- Preparation of condition reports for proposed acquisitions or loans of paper based material.
- Record all activities relating to conservation using Collection Management System.
- Produce reports for all research results and ensure availability for relevant units.
Communication & Working Relationships
- Internal: Culture Sector.
- External: Key Vendors/Suppliers, Government & Education Institutions, International Institutions.
EHS and Change Management
- Comply with all relevant EHS guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Support creation of culture susceptible to change management through hands on approach.
