Role Overview

The Medical Coder translates medical diagnoses, procedures, and services into standardized codes for billing and documentation.

The role ensures coding accuracy and compliance with coding guidelines and regulations.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze patient records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures.
  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes based on clinical documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, payer requirements, and hospital policies.
  • Collaborate with physicians and healthcare providers to clarify diagnoses and treatments.
  • Resolve coding discrepancies and claim denials with the billing department.
  • Maintain patient record confidentiality and integrity.
  • Stay updated on coding standards, healthcare regulations, and industry best practices.

Quality and Safety

  • Maintain service quality and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Comply with safety, quality-control, environmental safety, and infection-control procedures.
  • Maintain safety and quality-assurance standards.
  • Support clinical audits and submit reports as required.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare personnel.

Continuous Education

  • Participate in staff education, induction, peer reviews, case studies, clinical presentations, departmental programmes, committees, and meetings.
  • Support the orientation and training of new employees.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through lectures, seminars, and online learning.
  • Complete licensing, certification, and mandatory training requirements within specified timelines.
  • Apply technical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and related sciences.

Occupational Safety and Health

  • Comply with occupational safety, health management system, and infection-control policies and procedures.
  • Report hazards, incidents, near misses, and safety concerns.
  • Assist with risk assessments and incident reports.
  • Attend required safety and infection-control training, awareness programmes, and mock drills.
  • Follow safe working procedures, use appropriate personal protective equipment, and understand emergency procedures.
  • Follow waste-management procedures and participate in safety audits and inspections.

Infection Prevention and Control

  • Comply with the NMC infection prevention and control policy and strategy.
  • Maintain cleanliness and environmental hygiene to minimize infection risks.
  • Follow the five moments of hand hygiene and the bare-below-the-elbows requirement.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Certification in medical coding, such as CPC, CCS, or an equivalent certification.
  • In-depth knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Knowledge of hospital information systems and coding software.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Effective communication with clinical and administrative teams.
  • Self-motivated and able to work under pressure.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English; Arabic is an advantage.
  • Proficient in IT applications and adaptable with good time-management skills.
