Role Overview
STEP is the UK flagship programme to deliver a prototype fusion energy plant targeting first operations around 2040.
The Magnets Engineering Manager will lead the design and development of superconducting magnets that confine plasma in the STEP tokamak.
The role reports to the Head of Tokamak Machine and leads UKFE, UKAEA, and external specialist contributors.

Programme and role overview
STEP is the UK flagship programme to deliver a prototype fusion energy plant targeting first operations around 2040.
The Magnets Engineering Manager will lead the design and development of superconducting magnets that confine plasma in the STEP tokamak.
The role reports to the Head of Tokamak Machine and leads UKFE, UKAEA, and external specialist contributors.
Technical delivery
- Act as Technical Authority for STEP magnets and ensure their performance, integrity, and technical delivery.
- Drive magnet design, including remountable joints, in harmony with the overall plant design.
- Manage interfaces with wider STEP power plant systems and protect programme intellectual property.
- Prioritize technical risks and deliver mitigating actions through technology demonstrations.
- Coordinate with plasma, power and cooling, commercial, prototype and test, project management, and external organizations.
- Work with project managers to manage budgets and milestones.
Team and supply chain leadership
- Develop recruitment, retention, training, and professional development strategies for magnet staff.
