Program Overview

NiSource is seeking a Summer IT Software Engineer Intern to learn within a team environment and complete meaningful technology projects.

The 12-week summer internship starts in May 2027 and is intended for students entering their junior or senior year in fall 2027.

The role is based in Columbus, Ohio, or Merrillville, Indiana, and candidates must reside within 50 miles of the reporting location.

Potential IT Work Areas

  • Enterprise Architecture develops technology strategy, roadmaps, standards, and guidelines for IT applications and platforms.
  • IT Services supports delivery of application and infrastructure services, including hardware and software asset and configuration management.
  • Infrastructure work includes network technical design, infrastructure project execution, and incident, problem, change, asset, and configuration management.
  • IT Security work includes developing and executing a cyber incident response scenario exercise and improving security and IT operations integration.
  • IT Applications work includes application development, system administration, support, business applications, system interfaces, and development lifecycle activities.
  • Business Analytics work includes data discovery, modeling, cleansing, structuring, and visualization to identify patterns and support business decisions.

Required Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in data science, computer science, computer engineering, statistics, or mathematics.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 and at least one year of undergraduate study completed.
  • Experience with cloud, software development, data analytics, automation, or enterprise technologies.
  • Strong attention to detail, quality focus, oral and written communication, planning, organization, and ability to learn technology quickly.
  • Proficiency with computers, operating systems, mobile devices, Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project, and other IT applications.
  • Excellent analytical abilities, including process analysis, development, problem-solving, and root-cause analysis.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week.

  • The position is based in Columbus, Ohio, or Merrillville, Indiana.
  • Candidates must reside within 50 miles of the reporting location.

Program Schedule

  • This is a 12-week summer internship starting in May 2027.

Operational Expectations

Employees may support emergency response efforts outside normal hours or assist with tasks outside typical responsibilities during emergencies such as storms.

Employees are expected to follow safety requirements, report hazards, and help maintain a safe environment.

Salary

  • The salary range is USD 19.80 to USD 33.00 per hour.
