Position Summary

KAUST is seeking an HPC Computational Scientist to support compiling, running, debugging, and optimizing internally developed codes on high-performance computing systems.

The role supports CPU and GPU partitions, including the Shaheen III systems, and enables research in computational science, engineering, data analysis, and artificial intelligence.

User and Research Support

  • Provide timely support through telephone, walk-in, email, and ticketing systems for user inquiries and issues.
  • Work with faculty, researchers, collaboration partners, and industrial partners to meet research objectives.
  • Provide individual and group instruction and training for the user community.
  • Develop and maintain user, system, test, installation, and internal technical documentation.

HPC Applications and Development

  • Install, port, tune, and optimize high-performance applications, tools, libraries, and data-analysis software for CPU and GPU architectures.
  • Develop software tools and parallel application libraries to support research projects on cluster systems and subsystems.
  • Develop application benchmarks for periodic laboratory system upgrades.
  • Support benchmarking activities for future equipment and system procurements.

Research and Professional Practice

  • Maintain scientific, technical, and professional currency through collaboration, practice, training, conferences, and independent learning.
  • Pursue research activities aligned with laboratory priorities and personal strengths, including papers and presentations where appropriate.
  • Engage in scientific communication and outreach.

Education and Experience

  • A Ph.D. in computer science, computational science and engineering, or a closely related discipline is required.
  • At least five years of experience using and supporting large-scale computing platforms and related subsystems is required.
  • Relevant experience in computational science and engineering, parallel computing, and storage systems is required.
  • Research experience may include performance modeling, HPC code tuning, I/O, data management, data compression, emerging architectures, or node-level programming environments.
  • Experience with CUDA, OpenCL, OpenACC, OpenMP compiler directives, MPI, or related distributed programming models is required.
  • Experience computing at scale on Top500 systems is desired.

Competencies

  • Expertise supporting computational science, engineering, data analysis, or artificial intelligence applications and libraries in different HPC environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to support research and collaborate successfully in a research environment.
  • A publication record in computational science and engineering or data analysis journals and conferences.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, planning, organizational, teamwork, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
