Key Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and develop the English Department to achieve high standards of teaching and learning.

- Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Promote literacy development and a love of reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking throughout the school.
Curriculum Planning and Development
- Oversee the planning, implementation, evaluation, and enhancement of the English curriculum.
- Ensure curriculum alignment with school requirements, educational standards, and examination board specifications.
- Lead curriculum review processes and introduce innovative teaching strategies and resources.
- Ensure consistency and progression in learning outcomes across all year groups.
Teaching and Learning
- Model outstanding classroom practice and maintain a teaching timetable as required.
- Conduct lesson observations and provide constructive feedback to teachers.
- Support the implementation of differentiated instruction to meet diverse student needs.
- Promote the effective use of educational technology and evidence based teaching practices.
Staff Management and Development
- Support the recruitment, induction, and retention of high quality English teaching staff.
- Conduct performance management reviews and support professional growth.
- Mentor and coach teachers to enhance instructional effectiveness and student outcomes.
- Lead departmental meetings, collaborative planning sessions, and professional learning initiatives.
Student Achievement and Assessment
- Monitor and analyze student performance data to identify strengths, gaps, and areas for improvement.
- Develop intervention and enrichment programs to support student achievement.
- Ensure consistency in assessment, moderation, marking, and reporting practices.
- Monitor examination preparation and performance for internal and external assessments.
Literacy Development
- Lead whole school literacy initiatives and support cross curricular literacy development.
- Promote reading programs, writing initiatives, and literacy enrichment activities.
- Encourage participation in literary competitions, debates, public speaking events, and other language related activities.
Quality Assurance
- Monitor teaching quality and curriculum delivery across the department.
- Lead departmental self evaluation and contribute to school improvement planning.
- Prepare departmental reports, action plans, and performance analyses.
- Support inspection, accreditation, and quality assurance processes.
Parent and Community Engagement
- Communicate effectively with parents regarding student progress and academic expectations.
- Participate in parent meetings, curriculum information sessions, and school events.
- Build positive partnerships with parents and the wider school community to support student success.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Manage departmental budgets, resources, and educational materials effectively.
- Maintain accurate records of assessments, student progress, and departmental activities.
- Ensure compliance with school policies, safeguarding procedures, and health and safety requirements.
