About the Role

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Lead, hire, empower, and coach a team of data scientists while setting standards for analytical quality and career growth.
• Partner with Product and cross-functional leaders to identify opportunities, prioritize investments, and influence product roadmaps.
• Define key metrics and develop monitoring systems to rigorously evaluate product initiatives, including AI-powered features.
• Support A/B tests, segmentation, funnel analysis, inferential analyses, and evaluations for AI and machine learning systems.
• Collaborate with ML Engineering and Product on personalization, prediction, and intelligent automation features.
• Review analyses for technical rigor and business relevance.
• Present insights and recommendations to senior leadership and shape executive decision-making.

Required Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in data science or related fields.
• At least 4 years managing and scaling high-performing data science teams.
• Deep expertise in product analytics across acquisition, activation, retention, engagement, or expansion in SaaS or product-led environments.
• Advanced coding skills, strong statistical reasoning, and familiarity with experimentation frameworks.
• Experience with data science and AI product development, including model behavior, evaluation design, and customer-facing AI trade-offs.
• Ability to connect analytical insights to product and business goals and influence roadmaps.
• Experience presenting complex findings to senior stakeholders as clear, actionable recommendations.
• Experience collaborating with Product, Engineering, and go-to-market teams.
• Hands-on machine learning application experience in product contexts is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with multi-product SaaS ecosystems and customer lifecycle analytics is desirable.

Compensation

• Targeted cash compensation is $185,000-$217,000 in Denver and $218,000-$255,000 in San Francisco and New York.
• Final offer amounts may vary based on candidate experience and expertise.

Workplace Expectations

• Employees based in Gusto office locations are expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week, or more depending on the role.
• When approved to work outside a Gusto office, employees must maintain a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection.
• The San Francisco office expectation includes the San Francisco and San Jose metropolitan areas.
