Role Overview
The Forward Deployed Software Engineer writes code and works with partner technical teams and end users to understand operational needs.
The engineer designs and builds solutions end-to-end, including architecture, implementation, testing, and deployment.
Solutions are deployed close to the mission and durable capabilities are later incorporated into the core platform.
Responsibilities
- Design and build software applications for partner operational problems from architecture through deployment.
- Translate ambiguous requirements into working software on tight timelines.
- Build platform interfaces and connectors and validate data flows in the field.
- Deploy solutions on site, gather operator feedback, and iterate quickly.
- Identify capabilities for the core product and collaborate with platform engineering.
- Debug live operational issues, resolve them, and document findings.
- Build relationships with client technical teams and end users.
Requirements
- 4+ years building and shipping production software.
- Python and at least one lower-level language, such as C++, Rust, or Go.
- Experience taking ambiguous problems through to working, deployed end-to-end systems.
- Ability to own design, development, debugging, and deployment on Linux and in operational conditions.
- Clear communication with client technical teams and senior stakeholders.
- Practical approach to ill-defined problems and tight deadlines.
- Frequent domestic and international travel to partner sites.
- English proficiency is mandatory.
Nice to Have
- Prior forward-deployed, solutions engineering, or customer-facing engineering experience.
- Experience in computer vision, deep learning, mission planning, robotics, or embedded software.
- A degree from a leading engineering school.
Field Work
- The role involves frequent on-site work with domestic and international partners.
