Position Information

The First Cook works on the MV Saga X, a company vessel alongside Squamish, British Columbia.

The role reports to the Sous Chef and supports food production for the vessel-based floatel operation.

Compensation and Employment

  • Terms of employment are hourly and rotational, with an average wage of CAD 25.36 per hour.
  • The position is listed as full-time and includes extended health benefits.

Workplace and Schedule

  • The typical rotation is 28 days on and 14 days off, with department schedules varying.
  • The employer pays for flights from major Canadian cities and transportation to and from the project site.
  • The role involves working onboard a vessel and may require standing, walking, lifting, climbing, and exposure to heat, steam, and water.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute daily food production, preparation, ingredient pull, and tempering lists according to recipes and yield guidelines.
  • Prepare high-volume proteins, sauces, starches, vegetables, buffet items, and Grab & Go dishes.
  • Oversee Second and Third Cooks and maintain food quality, production continuity, and food safety.
  • Monitor production and inventory, assist with ordering and stock rotation, and report shortages.
  • Maintain food safety logs, personal hygiene, and effective communication with the culinary team.

Qualifications

  • FoodSafe Level I is required; FoodSafe Level II is preferred.
  • At least two years of progressive First Cook experience in high-volume production kitchens or banquet/accommodations facilities.
  • Culinary diploma or related work experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, on a rotational vessel schedule.
  • Ability to work in an English-speaking team environment and manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to pass required screening, marine medical, and physical demands assessments.
  • Ability to obtain MED Domestic Vessel Safety and Crowd and Crisis Management certificates within six months.
