Environmental Vector Control and Surveillance Intern II (Undergraduate)

Pollinator Enhancement Project: Vegetation and insect surveillance, site monitoring, and site management

Mosquito Surveillance: Mosquito trapping, surveillance, identification, data collection, and related field activities

Tick Surveillance: Evaluation procedures, pilot trapping and surveillance methodologies, and project development

Pesticide Treatment Support: Driving and navigation for pesticide treatment activities, treatment-route revisions, and related County GIS applications

Environmental Monitoring: Rainfall collection, environmental data recording, and evaluation of environmental factors affecting pest and vector populations

Research and Project Development: Research, project design, implementation support, and development of pilot programs for enhanced trapping and surveillance

Data and Administrative Support: Data entry, organization, analysis, documentation, and administrative project implementation

Community Outreach: Public speaking, educational outreach, participation in community events, and coordination with County employees and citizens

Other duties and projects assigned

The role of arboviral vectors in disease transmission

Mosquito biology, bionomics, and identification procedures

Tick surveillance and evaluation methodologies

The relationship between environmental factors, pest/vector populations, and disease

Pesticides and their role within an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) framework

Registered Pesticide Technician criteria and certification requirements

Field collection techniques and environmental surveillance

Data entry, management, and analysis

Research, project development, and implementation

Community outreach and public education

Internships are intended to provide the intern with basic experiential exposure to a field of interest. The intern must bring a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities and finish the internship having gained basic experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.
