- Create, maintain, and update Bills of Materials (BOMs) in SolidWorks and ERP system
- Collaborate with Production Engineering to ensure designs are manufacturable
- Resolve design issues identified during production and incorporate improvements
- Liaise with Purchasing to source new components and evaluate commercially available parts
- Support prototype development, testing, and continuous product improvement
- Ensure designs comply with engineering standards, customer specs, and quality requirements
- Support engineering change requests throughout product lifecycle
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, or equivalent
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in mechanical product design
- Minimum 3 years’ experience using SolidWorks
- Experience using SolidWorks 3DX Collaborative Platform
- Experience designing sheet metal components and welded steel fabrications preferred
- Experience with heavy vehicles, aviation ground support equipment, or hydraulic/pneumatic systems advantageous

Role Summary
- The Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of STAAR’s aviation refueling vehicles, fuel handling equipment, and supporting components.
- The role focuses on creating robust, manufacturable designs using SolidWorks, maintaining engineering documentation, and ensuring accurate product structures through effective management of drawings, part numbers, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- The Design Engineer works closely with Production Engineering and Purchasing to ensure designs are practical, cost effective, and optimized for manufacturing.
Role Responsibilities
- Design and develop aviation refueling vehicles, assemblies, and supporting components using SolidWorks.
- Produce accurate manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and detailed fabrication drawings.
- Manage engineering part numbers, drawing revisions, and document control.
- Create, maintain, and update Bills of Materials (BOMs) within both SolidWorks and the ERP system.
- Ensure engineering documentation remains accurate, complete, and reflects the latest approved revisions.
- Work closely with Production Engineering to ensure products are designed for efficient manufacturing and assembly.
- Resolve design issues identified during production and incorporate improvements into future revisions.
- Liaise with Purchasing to source new components and evaluate commercially available parts for suitability.
- Support prototype development, testing, and continuous product improvement.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable engineering standards, customer specifications, and internal quality requirements.
- Support engineering change requests throughout the product lifecycle.
- Create and maintain engineering part numbers and product master data within the ERP system.
Educational Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, or an equivalent engineering qualification preferred.
- Alternative engineering qualifications with relevant product design experience will also be considered.
- SolidWorks certification is highly desirable.
Experience
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience in mechanical product design.
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience using SolidWorks.
- Demonstrated experience using the SolidWorks (3DX) Collaborative Platform.
- Experience designing sheet metal components and welded steel fabrications is strongly preferred.
- The following design experience will be considered highly advantageous: Heavy vehicles or trailers; Aviation ground support equipment; Plumbing and pipework systems; Hydraulic systems; Pneumatic systems.
