Role Overview
Octopus Energy is hiring mid-level Backend Engineers for its Devices and Low Carbon Tech teams.
The teams build software and integrations that support smart energy devices, EV chargers, solar, batteries, and heat pumps in homes.
What You Will Do
- Own medium-sized technical features and components independently, delivering stable production-ready code with minimal supervision.
- Ship continuously to trunk through small pull requests and rapid feedback.
- Build and extend a Django backend serving multiple countries from a single codebase.
- Integrate daily with Kraken Customer, Kraken Field, and Kraken Flex for billing, CRM, authentication, and device control.
- Design and build platform architecture, data integrations, and automations for low-carbon technology.
- Improve monitoring, alerting, and observability in live applications.
- Participate in technical designs, code reviews, pull request documentation, bug resolution, service blocker resolution, and incident management.
What You Will Need
- Three to four years of experience building web applications in Python, ideally using Django.
- Experience writing highly testable code with unit, integration, and functional tests running in parallel in CI.
- Experience with relational databases and background task processing.
- Comfort working in a large multi-tenant codebase with shared abstractions, territory-specific behavior, and upstream service integrations.
- Comfort with continuous delivery and automated type checking, linting, and CI guardrails.
- Openness to integrating modern AI tools into development, testing, and debugging.
- High initiative, ability to break down engineering problems, curiosity about smart energy devices, and coachability.
Core Technology Stack
- Python and Django.
- PostgreSQL, Celery, and asynchronous background processing.
- GraphQL, REST, and HTTP API architectures.
- Domain modeling, fault-tolerant systems, and test-driven development.
Valuable Experience
- TypeScript, AWS Lambda, and CDK are valuable.
- DynamoDB, event-driven microservices, and API Gateway are valuable.
- Distributed architecture and scaling across services are valuable.
