Supervisor, Parks Construction

Hires, supervises, directs and develops staff, monitoring performance towards division, department, and corporate objectives; ensures staff adhere to corporate workplace conduct and purchasing policies. Leads, coaches, and develops staff recognizing the importance of technical and safety training.

Develops, implements, and ensures adherence to safe work procedures and ensures they are integrated into the work routines of staff and contractors. Conducts monthly safety meetings and inspections. Continuously monitors work practices noting and addressing recurring issues; identifies and mitigates construction hazards; and investigates and reports on safety incidents.

Writes letters, memos, reports, specifications, requests for proposals, and committee reports pertaining to the construction function.

Liaises with operations staff, the public, contractors, park partners, Emergency Services, and government agencies as required.

Performs other related duties as required.

To be successful, you have:

3 years of recent, related construction experience supplemented by a university degree or diploma in a relevant discipline such as construction, civil/structural engineering technology, architecture or landscape architecture, engineering or another relevant field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Sound understanding and knowledge of the methods and objectives of park capital construction including civil, carpentry, trail and road construction, landscaping and related works, and considerable knowledge of corporate and regional park policies, procedures, goals and regulations.

Complete understanding of the BC Building Code, WSA permitting and regulating, BC Heritage Conservation Act, and municipal and other relevant permitting related to park construction.

Complete understanding of the materials, techniques, equipment, and skilled trades required for park capital construction.

Civil aptitude and ability to lead staff in the use of a wide variety of equipment and technologies related to parks construction. Ability to train staff in safe work procedures and work outside in all weather conditions.

Ability to work within established budgetary and financial objectives and possesses sound basic budgeting and accounting skills. Ability to monitor budgets ensuring the effective and efficient expenditure of allocated funds within the approved budget. Ability to assist with budget planning and preparation, forecast resource needs and identify cost saving opportunities.

Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills including the ability to understand, consistently apply and explain collective agreements and corporate policies. Ability to organize, direct and supervise the work of others in a team environment; skill in training and coaching staff to achieve goals and objectives.

Ability to use judgment to resolve problems by adapting or applying procedures to address issues and problem situations. Demonstrates persistence in overcoming obstacles.

Sound written and oral communication skills. Ability to provide clear direction in emergency situations; tactfully respond to inquiries and complaints from the public. Ability to write standard business correspondence such as letters and memos.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts. Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to work cooperatively with others; ability to effectively deal with disagreements to prevent the escalation of conflict.

Proficiency using Microsoft office programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License.
