Job Overview
- The Specialist Physician shares responsibility with the Consultant Physician for delivering high quality, evidence based and patient centred care.
- The post holder is expected to be an example of clinical excellence and contributes to supervision and training of junior medical staff.
Managerial/Administration
- Supports and adheres to all hospital departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures.
- Supports and participates in the organization's performance management system, including peer review and productivity reviews.
- Assists Consultant staff in ensuring adequate medical coverage within the Division at all times.
- Attends Divisional meetings as invited.
- Supports reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidents.
- Assumes other administrative or clinical duties as requested by Consultant Staff.
Technical
- Under supervision of Consultant Physician, diagnoses and treats patients according to established standards.
- Assists Consultant Physician in supervising junior medical staff and jointly assumes responsibility for their care.
- Complies with hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow up practices.
- Practices appropriate utilization of organization's resources.
- Leads ward rounds; reassesses inpatients and outpatients regularly.
- Accurately documents all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion.
- Regularly reviews results of all investigations and modifies treatment as required.
- Liaises with other medical specialties and support services for additional input.
- Actively participates in multi disciplinary meetings to plan effective, safe and holistic care.
- Ensures preparation of patients for procedures including obtaining informed consent.
- Accepts clinically appropriate referrals from various sources.
- Participates in out of hours on call coverage on a rotational basis.
Quality & Safety
- Helps support quality improvement initiatives within the Division.
- Supports a culture of regular audit and encourages use of audit results for improving clinical practice.
- Supports reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidents.
Education
- Promotes and participates in clinical research and publication.
- Promotes and assists in instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff.
- Keeps abreast of current relevant literature and latest trends and technologies.
- Participates in clinical research and publication.
