Overview

  • The Consultant Physician is responsible for leading and supervising the delivery of high quality evidence based care; effectively and efficiently diagnosing, managing and treating all patients placed under the post holder's care.
  • Expected to be an example of clinical excellence within his or her specialty and to provide leadership and training for junior medical staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supports, implements, and follows all hospital, departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures.
  • Helps lead and implement the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.
  • Participates in the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.
  • Assists with scheduling and supports the Division Chief in ensuring adequate medical coverage within the Division at all times.
  • Attends Divisional meetings as required.
  • Assists the Division Chief in the recruitment of new medical staff when appropriate.
  • Assumes other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief.
  • Diagnoses and treats patients according to established standards of best practice for the post holder's specialty.
  • Oversees the clinical activities of the junior medical staff and assumes responsibility for the care they provide.
  • Complies with all established hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow up practices.
  • Practices appropriate utilization of the organization's resources.
  • Leads ward round; reassesses both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis, in line with established best practice.

Additional Clinical Duties

  • Accurately documents all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures.
  • Regularly reviews results of all investigations and modifies treatment as required.
  • Liaises with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required.
  • Actively participates in multi disciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patients.
  • Ensures preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent.
  • Accepts clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals.
  • Participates in and ensures the provision on call hours (on call) coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as required.
  • Communicates clinical information to patients and the patient's family and friends (with the consent of the patient) in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a good working relationship with members of staff and promotes collaboration and a team based approach to patient care.
  • Performs other clinical duties as assigned.

Quality and Improvement

  • Helps lead quality improvement within the Department.
  • Supports a culture of regular audit and encourages the use of audit results for improving clinical practice.
  • Supports the reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidents.

Learning and Development

  • Fosters a culture of learning, development and continuous improvement across the Department by promoting and assisting in the instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff.
  • Facilitating the provision of essential training relevant to clinical staff in the specialty.
  • Showing commitment to Continued Medical Education (CME).
  • Promotes and participates in clinical research and publication.
  • Keeps abreast of the current, relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry.

Compliance Guidelines

  • Complying with Policies, Procedures, and Practices of the SSMC facilities and other regulatory requirements.
  • Completing and maintaining regulatory requirements including licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established time frames.
  • Maintaining Confidentiality.
