About the Role
Astra Tech seeks a Software Architect to lead the architecture of next-generation payment systems, including merchant acquiring and core payment processing. You will own backend architecture, guide engineering squads, and drive technical decisions across a Java microservices stack.

Responsibilities
- Architect and evolve systems spanning Merchant Management, POS, and eCommerce acceptance
- Own technical architectural direction and design decisions across multiple engineering squads
- Work directly with Product Owners to translate product intent and regulatory requirements into system designs
- Define integration architecture across card schemes, payment processor, and internal switching layers
- Design REST/JSON APIs with emphasis on idempotency, fault tolerance, and exactly once semantics
- Drive event driven flows using RabbitMQ for transaction lifecycle events
- Design Redis backed patterns for distributed caching, idempotency key management, rate limiting, and real time state
- Use AI coding assistant (Claude Code) for architecture reviews, code generation, and automation
Requirements
- 12 to 15 years of backend or platform engineering experience with production card payment systems
- Expert level Java and Spring Boot proficiency
- Deep, production proven command of ISO 8583 and payment messaging
- Experience integrating with payment gateways and processors (e.g., MPGS, Cybersource)
- Experience with RabbitMQ or Kafka message broker
- Worked with Dubbo or comparable RPC framework (gRPC)
- Architect leader who leads a pod of engineers by example

What You'll Do

What We're Looking For

- Required: Java / Spring Boot, ISO 8583, jPOS, MPGS / Cybersource / Payment gateway, RabbitMQ / Kafka, Redis, gRPC Framework, REST APIs, Microservices, GitLab / GitHub, MySQL / MongoDB / Elastic Search.
- Strong Asset: Azure / AWS, 3DS (EMV 3DS 2.x), EMV, Tokenisation, Visa / Mastercard Scheme Integration, CI/CD, TOGAF.
