Who We Are
ATCO Frontec provides facilities management, remote operations, infrastructure, construction, and defence support services across Canada and internationally.
We partner with government, Indigenous, industrial, commercial, and defence clients to deliver safe, reliable, and innovative solutions in both urban and remote environments.
Our success is built on operational excellence, strong client relationships, and the expertise of our people.
Position Overview
The North of 60 Projects Team, part of ATCO Frontec's Major Projects Business Unit, is seeking a versatile, hands-on Site Operations Manager to lead field execution on complex projects in remote and challenging environments.
The successful candidate will combine broad technical knowledge, practical problem-solving, strong leadership, and disciplined planning and reporting.
Field Leadership & Execution
Lead day-to-day site execution with limited oversight and maintain a safe, accountable, and productive site culture.
Direct employees, trades, subcontractors, vendors, and equipment operators; set priorities and coordinate daily and weekly work fronts.
Monitor progress, workmanship, manpower, equipment, constraints, and schedule performance; address or escalate issues early.
Make sound field decisions under pressure while protecting safety, quality, cost, schedule, and client commitments.
Multi-Discipline Coordination
Coordinate electrical, mechanical, controls, civil, structural, architectural, and general construction activities.
Read and interpret drawings, specifications, single-line diagrams, schematics, P&IDs, control narratives, schedules, manuals, and vendor documents.
Identify constructability issues, design conflicts, interface gaps, and missing information; work with engineering, project management, vendors, and trades on practical solutions.
Provide hands-on technical support and troubleshooting within applicable trade and regulatory limits.
Planning, Logistics & Project Support
Support execution planning during office or home-based periods, including sequencing, look-aheads, constructability reviews, material readiness, workforce planning, and mobilization.
Coordinate with project management, engineering, procurement, logistics, clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and local stakeholders.
Confirm that tools, materials, equipment, permits, information, and qualified resources are available before work begins.
Manage changing priorities, weather, transportation constraints, and limited resources common to remote project delivery.
Safety, Quality & Closeout
Lead work in accordance with company, client, regulatory, and project-specific safety and quality requirements.
Support safety meetings, hazard assessments, inspections, permits, testing, commissioning, deficiencies, non-conformances, and turnover.
Stop or correct unsafe, non-compliant, or poor-quality work and ensure follow-up is completed.
Reporting & Documentation
Prepare concise daily reports covering completed work, manpower, equipment, progress, safety, quality, weather, delays, constraints, and upcoming activities.
Maintain photographs, timesheets, delivery and inspection records, redlines, deficiencies, field instructions, and material tracking.
Use Microsoft 365, project management systems, and digital field tools; document field conditions and impacts supporting change management.
Required
Progressive experience leading field execution on construction, industrial, infrastructure, technology, facilities, or equipment installation projects.
Broad practical knowledge across electrical, mechanical, controls, civil, structural, and general construction.
Experience
supervising employees, trades, subcontractors, and vendors in active project environments.
Ability to interpret varied design drawings, specifications, schedules, and technical documents.
Proven ability to plan work, coordinate interfaces, solve field problems, and make decisions with limited direction.
Strong computer skills, including email, Word, Excel, Teams, document management, and digital reporting tools.
Clear written and verbal communication skills, including professional site reporting and stakeholder updates.
Ability to work from an office or home-based setting between assignments and travel for prolonged periods to Northern sites, other project locations, supplier facilities, and partner locations.
Valid driver's licence and ability to meet site access requirements.
Able to obtain Federal Government Security Clearance.
Preferred Assets
Journeyperson certification, construction management credential, engineering technology diploma, or equivalent technical training and field experience.
Remote Northern, Arctic, fly-in/fly-out, camp-based, or other travel-intensive project experience.
Experience
with power generation, water or wastewater treatment, building systems, controls, communications, fuel systems, utilities, or industrial equipment.
Experience
with remote logistics, testing, commissioning, start-up, deficiency resolution, and turnover.
Experience
operating or directing common site equipment such as skid steers, telehandlers, and aerial work platforms.
Leadership Profile
Hands-on and adaptable, with the willingness to work outside a narrow job description.
Calm and decisive under pressure, with strong ownership and follow-through.
Practical problem-solver who communicates issues early and balances technical requirements with workable field solutions.
Respectful leader who earns trust, coaches others, and maintains standards without unnecessary conflict.
Safety Certifications (Preferred)
CSTS 2020 or equivalent; WHMIS; Standard First Aid with CPR; Fall Protection; Elevated Work Platform / MEWP; Ground Disturbance; Confined Space; Lockout/Tagout; and other client or site-specific training as required.
Work Environment
Combination of office or home-based project planning and field assignments.
Frequent travel, including prolonged stints at Northern sites, other project locations, supplier facilities, and partner locations.
Site assignments may involve camp accommodation, isolated locations, variable weather, physically demanding conditions, and extended workdays during critical periods.
