Responsibilities
- Underwrite new and renewal commercial property and casualty business across Canada, evaluating and pricing risks in accordance with guidelines and profitability objectives.
- Collaborate with broker partners to quote, negotiate, and structure coverage solutions for new and renewal business, including moderately complex and VIP risks.
- Build and maintain strong broker relationships while delivering timely, responsive service.
- Analyze risk information to determine acceptability, coverage structure, and pricing.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and referral support to underwriters.
- Contribute to underwriting strategy, portfolio performance, process improvements, and departmental initiatives.
Requirements
- 5+ years of commercial underwriting experience, including complex commercial property and casualty risks.
- Post secondary education preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- CIP designation completed or in progress; FCIP, CRM, or CAIB designations are assets.
- Advanced knowledge of commercial property and casualty insurance products, coverage structures, underwriting principles, and risk management practices.
- Strong analytical, decision making, negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills.
- Experience mentoring or supporting underwriters.

Overview
- We’re searching for a Senior Underwriter, Commercial. In this role, you’ll be responsible for driving profitable growth by underwriting new and renewal commercial property and casualty business across Canada.
- This is a hybrid position based out of our Surrey, BC head office, however we are open to consider remote candidates based outside of our current office locations.
Once here, you'll:
- Underwrite new and renewal commercial property and casualty business across Canada, evaluating and pricing risks in accordance with underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and profitability objectives.
- Collaborate with broker partners to quote, negotiate, and structure coverage solutions for new and renewal business, including moderately complex and VIP risks.
- Build and maintain strong broker relationships while delivering timely, responsive service and supporting business growth, retention, and client satisfaction.
- Analyze risk information to determine acceptability, coverage structure, and pricing, applying sound risk management, loss control principles, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and referral support to underwriters while contributing to underwriting strategy, portfolio performance, process improvements, and departmental initiatives.
Why we’ll love You:

Expected Compensation
- The expected hiring range for this role is CAD 76,000 to CAD 95,000 based on a 35 hour work week.
- Westland also offers a competitive annual short term incentive program.
