Overview

Senior or Associate Principal Engineer in the Bridges and Civils team within the Transportation business.

The Derby team delivers railway civil engineering projects and also supports civil engineering and structures work across sectors and geographies.

Projects include rail, highways, local authority, water, nuclear, and other major infrastructure schemes.

Your role

  • Develop high-quality civil and structural designs for new construction, renewals, maintenance, and assessments.
  • Collaborate with national and international design teams to create sustainable impacts on society and the environment.
  • Manage production and review of sketches, drawings, calculations, reports, and specifications.
  • Carry out technical work independently and provide guidance to junior staff.
  • Lead design, assessment, and maintenance teams on structural and railway civil engineering projects.
  • Provide civil and structural input on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Develop scopes and manage technical supply chains, budgets, programmes, and deliverable quality.
  • Analyse engineering problems, appraise options, and recommend suitable solutions.
  • Lead bids and tenders, win work, and develop client relationships.

About you

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
  • CEng or IEng professional qualification and membership of ICE or IStructE.
  • Experience as a CRE, Deputy CRE, Workpackage Manager, or Deputy Engineering Manager on railway civil engineering or station projects.
  • Experience with Network Rail, HS2, local authorities, or major contractors and developers.
  • Good understanding of Eurocodes, DMRB, MCHW, and Network Rail design standards.
  • Practical knowledge of railway civil engineering or station design.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills across clients, stakeholders, and engineering disciplines.
  • Project management, commercial awareness, financial control, and stakeholder management skills.
