The team and role

Morningstar’s Analytics group develops proprietary methodologies, calculations, and analytical capabilities that help investors evaluate investments.

The Managed Investment Calculations team translates research and intellectual property into accurate, scalable, and consistent analytics.

The Product Manager will lead development and ongoing enhancement of managed investment calculation capabilities through product ownership and hands-on analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the tactical roadmap and backlog for managed investment calculations.
  • Define business requirements and success criteria with product, research, operations, and client support teams.
  • Translate methodologies into formulas, input requirements, eligibility rules, exceptions, and expected outputs.
  • Use SQL and analytical tools to investigate datasets, data quality, coverage, sources, dependencies, and downstream impacts.
  • Prototype and validate calculations across edge cases, missing data, historical changes, fund structures, and share classes.
  • Drive execution with engineering and QA through user stories, acceptance criteria, testing, regression coverage, and release readiness.
  • Investigate discrepancies and production issues, identify root causes, and prioritize fixes based on business impact.
  • Coordinate methodology and implementation changes and maintain traceability between approved methodologies and production logic.
  • Maintain documentation and support materials and communicate calculation outcomes, priorities, dependencies, and risks.

Required qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience in product management, business analysis, or data analysis, preferably within investment analytics, financial data, or financial services.
  • Strong hands-on SQL skills and experience analyzing complex datasets to validate results and investigate issues.
  • Ability to translate ambiguous business needs and financial methodologies into precise requirements, calculation logic, and acceptance criteria.
  • Understanding of managed investments, including mutual funds, ETFs, share classes, performance, risk, fees, and peer group comparisons.
  • Experience specifying, prototyping, or validating analytical calculations with attention to dependencies, exceptions, and reproducibility.
  • Experience prioritizing requirements or managing a backlog and collaborating with engineering and QA.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with investment datasets, financial calculations, or proprietary analytical methodologies.
  • Python or similar programming skills for data analysis, calculation prototyping, and validation.
  • Familiarity with centralized calculation services, APIs, data pipelines, cloud analytical platforms, data lineage, reconciliation, or automated quality controls.

Compensation

  • Base salary compensation range is $75,600 to $110,874.
  • The incentive target percentage is 12.5% annually.

Work environment

  • Morningstar describes the work environment as hybrid, with in-person collaboration each week.
  • In most locations, the hybrid model involves four days in the office each week.

Organization

The role is part of Morningstar Research, Inc. in Canada and supports collaboration with global colleagues.
