Principal Highways Engineer

Team support and mentoring

• Provide day-to-day technical guidance to graduate and junior engineers.
• Review and check work produced by less experienced team members.
• Support staff development through mentoring and professional development objectives.
• Promote good design practice and compliance with internal quality systems.

Essential qualifications and experience

• Degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• Working toward Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status, such as IEng or CEng.
• Proven highways and infrastructure design experience within a UK consultancy or local authority.
• Good working knowledge of DMRB, Manual for Streets, and LTN 1/20.
• Experience delivering schemes for local authority clients or development-led projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable qualifications and experience

• At least five years of post-graduation experience.
• Chartered Engineer status, such as IEng or CEng.
• Experience supporting construction stages, site activities, and mentoring junior staff.
• Familiarity with highway geometry, drainage, surveys, pavement design, signs, markings, street lighting, utilities, active travel, or safety improvement schemes.
• Familiarity with Microsoft, Autodesk, KeySign, KeyPost, or AutoTrack software.
