Principal Engineer - Systems

About the role

Responsibilities

• Lead systems engineering activities across complex defence and mission-system programmes.
• Drive requirements capture, decomposition, allocation, and traceability.
• Lead system architecture, interface management, integration, verification, and validation activities.
• Develop and review technical specifications, ICDs, integration plans, test procedures, and compliance documentation.
• Conduct system analysis, technical trade-offs, design reviews, and risk assessments.
• Provide technical leadership across software, hardware, networking, cybersecurity, and test teams.
• Support C2, C4ISR, tactical communications, secure networking, and distributed mission systems.
• Engage with customers, suppliers, and programme stakeholders and mentor systems engineering teams.

Basic qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Systems, Electrical, Telecommunications, Computer, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 10+ years of systems engineering experience in defence, aerospace, security, or mission-critical environments.
• Proven experience delivering complex defence or integrated systems programmes.
• Experience in C2, C4ISR, tactical communications, mission systems, or secure communications.
• Strong knowledge of systems engineering methodologies, lifecycle processes, integration, and verification.
• Experience managing technical interfaces and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with MBSE and tools such as Enterprise Architect, JAMA Connect, DOORS, or JIRA.
• Knowledge of INCOSE, MIL-STD, NATO interoperability standards, and secure communications architectures.
• Understanding of cybersecurity principles within defence systems.
• Experience supporting system acceptance, field trials, and operational deployments.
• Experience leading engineering teams or technical work packages.
